Hugh Fox was born in what is now known as Alexander County in 1820. He was the son of Moses Fox (1773-1855) and Susan Bridges (1774-1850). In the 1830 census of Lincoln County the Foxes were living in the Clines Township area of what is known as Catawba County. On January 2, 1842, Hugh married Sallie Shook (1818-1880), daughter of Henry Shook (March 16, 1789- February 24, 1870) and Elizabeth Dagenhart (June 12, 1788-March 12, 1849). Hugh’s death is recorded as 1866, Taylorsville,NC
Hugh and Sallie had four boys: Elcany (Cana), John (Noah), George, and James. They were the parents of two girls: Mary Ann, and Sarah Elizabeth.
Elcany or Cana Fox was born in 1844. Cana along with Hugh, his father, enlisted at Camp Vance in Burke County on Sept. 26, 1863 in the War Between the States. They served in Company G 37th Regiment N.C. Troops and both were among those who surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.
Cana Fox was first married to Luisa Drum, daughter of Daniel and Mary Rector on April 1, 1868 in Alexander County. They had a son named John Dallas Fox ( May 21, 1867-June 18,1942). He was married to Mary Etta Alexander (June 24, 1870-June 1 1944) at Concord Baptist Church on Paul Pagne Road. John Dallas and Mary Etta Fox had eleven children and farmed the Island Creek area in the Drum Stand Community. James R. (June 20, 1894-Dec. 7, 1967). Married Annie B. (June 17, 1904-July 26, 1875). Jay (Sept. 2, 1895) married a Mealer (April 3, 1897). They reside in Statesville, Fannie (June 2, 1897) married James T. Grant (June 25, 1892-Aug. 14, 1968). Mae (May, 1898) married a Warren and lives in Hickory. Mattie ( March 17, 1901-March 4, 1985) married O.L. Bibby. Carl (Feb 20, 1905-Feb 1, 1982) was neve married. Other sons are Fred, Lee, and Lester who reside in the Drum Stand Community of Alexander County. The other daughters are Mary who married a Mecimore lives in Hickory, and Willie who married Arthur Fox who lives in Alexander County. All deceased children of John Dallas and Mary Etta Fox, as well as John Dallas and Mary Etta Fox, are buried in the church cemetery at Concord Baptist Church. On March 27, 1891, Cana married Mittie Goble in Catawaba County. They had no children of their own. Mittie had four children by a previous marriage. Cana and Mittie was still living in Catawba County in 1915.
John Noah Fox better known as Noah Fox, was born in the Drumstand Elk Shoals Community of Alexander County, Jan. 10, 1847. He was baptized on June 27, 1847 at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Catawba County. Noah was the second born son of Hugh Fox and Sally Shook. Noah Fox was married three times. His first wife was Sarah Melisa Drum whom he married on Jan. 25, 1866 in Alexander County. Melisa ( Dec. 2, 1849-1920) was the daughter of Joseph Drum ( April 1, 1807- January 5, 1879) and Sarah Drum ( April 15, 1812-May 9, 1884). The Drums are buried on the grounds of the Old Drumstand School. Noah and Melisa had two sons. Charles Sylvester Fox ( June 21, 1867-Jan 20, 1931) was known as “Charlie” Fox and ran a store on Old NC 10 in the Shiloh Community of Iredell County. On Sept. 1, 1889, he married Marsh Ellas Byer (Jan. 4, 1874-April 3, 1938). She was the daughter of William Agustus Byers and Lola Stewart Byers. They had on adopted son (Stephen Morrison). Charlie and Marsh Ella are buried at New Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery in Western Iredell County. Ravon J. Fox was Noah and Melisa’s second born son. He was born in Alexander County on Sept. 28, 1873 and died Jan 11, 1935. He was married to Mammie Moose, They had seven children, Their daughter was Leona who married Robert Bullin, The sons’ names were Ross, Arthur Jr. Marshall, Coleman, John and Glenn. Ravon was a farmer and lived in Iredell County. Ravon and Mammie are buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, NC. Noah and Melisa were divorced in Alexander County around 1873. On Oct. 21, 1875, Noah Fox married Anna A. Odom (Dec. 26, 1846-Aug. 16, 1915) in Catawba County. They lived in Hillsboro and Wichita Falls, Texas from 1875 until 1890 when they moved to Canadian County, Oklahoma. Noah and Anna homesteaded south of El Reno near Oklahoma City. They had seven children: Willie Fox married a Shorter and lived in Ducan, Oklahoma. They had 14 children. Walter Clarence (Jack) Fox (Nov 22, 1890-Jun 29, 1963) lived in Geary, Oklahoma. His wife’s name was Agnes. They had six children. Jack is buried in the Geary Cemetery. Maude Fox ( Aug 11, 1881-Dec 23, 1919( married a Graves. Minnie Fox lived in Minco, Oklahoma. She was first married to a Miller and second to a Zimms. She had no children. Eugene E. Fox of Yukon, Oklahoma ( Feb. 12, 1888-March 23, 1972) married a Helen Venick. They had no children. They are buried in the Yukon, Oklahoma Cemetery. Rosco E. (Ross) Fox (July 14, 1885-aug 11, 1955) of El Reno, Oklahoma was married to Mattie Steele of Iredell County, NC. They had a son , Wilbur, who lives in El Reno, Bessie fox of Angdarco, Oklahoma married an Ulrey and had nine children. Upon the death of Anna, Noah returned to North Carolina where he met and married Laura Isabell Stewart (May 31, 1886-Feb 11, 1946) of Iredell County on Nov?. 16, 1916 in Statesville. Noah with his young bride went back to El Reno. On Jan 12, 1918 they had a daughter, Mary Gertrude Fox. She married James A. Waddell, Sr. of Spencer, NC. Gertrude Waddell had two sons: James A. Waddell, Jr. of Salisbury, NC AND Charles T. Waddell of Winston-Salem. On March 3, 1923 Noah died and was buried with Anna in the El Reno City Cemetery. Laura Isabell lived in El Reno until 1928 when she moved to Spencer NC. She is buried in the new Bethany Baptist Cemetery in Iredell County.
Mary Ann Fox (Sept. 7, 1853- May 7, 1918) married Elcanah Matthews ( 1847 -Sept. 15, 1917) son of Levi Matthews and Malinda Christopher on Aug. 23, 1874 at Sarah Fox’s house in the Clines Township area of Catawba County. Their children were Franklin (July, 1876), Fannie ( June, 1881), and Noah ( May, 1885). Mary Ann and Elcanah are buried at Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Catawba County.
Sarah Elizabeth Fox ( Oct. 11, 1856-March 4, 1899) married Socrates Benfield ( Sept. 22, 1853-May 18, 1919) son of Riley and Susan Benfield on Dec. 12, 1872 in Catawba County. Their children were Marcus M. (1873), Ida (June, 1885), Carrie (May 1887), Ed (April, 1889), and Artie (female) (June, 1890). Sarah and Socrates are buried at Bethel Lutheran Church in Catawba County.
George Fox was Born in Alexander County on June 20, 1859, On January 10, 1878 he married Harriette Huffman ( May 22, 1855-Dec 21, 1927) daughter of Miles Huffman (1831) and Sarah Mays. Miles Huffman was the son of Eli Huffman (1805-July 8, 1830) and Nancy Shook (b. 1810) Eli was the son of Christopher Huffman (b. 1776) and Polly Leah (m. 1768) Christopher Huffman was the son of Baltzar Huffman (b. 1741 in Germany, came to America in 1749) and Catherine Wagnoner daughter to Conrad Wagoner. Baltzar Huffman was the son of George Huffman who came to America in 1749 also. George Huffman was the son of Hans Georg Huffman (b. 1689). Hans was the son of Paulus Huffman and Barbara Prudentia. Paulus was the son of Ludwig Huffman ( b. 1622). Ludwig was the son of Wilhelm Huffman ( b. 1588). Wilhelm was the son of Andreas Huffman (b. 1568). Andreas was the son of Fredrick Huffman (b. 1522). Fredrick was the son of Ferdinand Huffman ( b. 1470). Ferdinand was the son of Johan Huffman (b. 1429). Johan was the son of Baron Fredrick Huffman (b. 1403-d. 1468) Marshall of Styria. Fredrick was the son of Johan Huffman (b. 1371-d. 1479 in Germany) Johan was the Rector of the University of Leipzig. After their marriage, George and Harriett lived in the Clines Township area near Catawba, N.C. George and Harriette had three sons named Charlie, Dallas, and Harvey, Dallas Howard Fox (June 12, 1886-July 6, 1963) was a furniture worker and farmer. He was lifetime resident of Route #3 Conover. His first wife was Jeannie P. (July 30, 1886-July 22, 1931). They had four sons: Fred, Clyde, and Guy of Conover as well as Frank who lives in Mocksville. Also, they had four daughters: Mrs. Annie Eabonhard of Bridgeport Conn. Essie Watson of Lenoir, Mrs. Vervie Huffman of Conover N.C. and Mrs. Maggie Eckard of Conover. His second wife was Thelma Hefner. They had no children. Dallas is buried alongside his first wife at Catawba Methodist Church Cemetery in Catawba, N.C. Charlie Franklin Fox ( Jan. 17 1891-Dec. 23, 1966) married Bertha Hedrick ( Jan. 21, 1892-July 21, 1975). Charlie F. was a resident of Statesville and was a carpenter by trade. They had eleven children. There were nine sons Seth Rome (Jan 2, 1913-Jun 27, 1989) of Conover, Ralph Charlotte, Ross E., R.L.(R.L. stands for nothing that was his name), Robert G., Howard, Claude, Neil and Buford ( all of Statesville). Charlie and Bertha had two daughters who are Edna Little of Statesville and Zelda Sigmon of Conover. Charlie and Bertha are buried at Catawaba Methodist Cemetery in Catawaba. Harvey Fox married Eliza Isenhour and had four sons, Poly, Mitchell, Coleman, and Troy and lived in Marion N.C.. George and Harriette are buried in the Methodist Church Cemetery in Catawba. N.C. Ralph Charlotte Fox (Nov 4, 1914-Feb 6, 1995) married Esther Houston and had two sons and one daughter. The sons are Boyce Fox (Dec 31, 1935) of Statesville and Dr. Dennis William Fox (Jan 24, 1937) of Mt. Holly NC. Their daughter is Shelby Benfield ( June 23, 1939) of Statesville. After the death of his first wife, Ralph married Lorene Frances Benfield (b Oct 23, 1918) daughter of Harvey S. Benfield Sr. ( Apr. 15, 1883- July 8, 1965) of Statesville and Tressie Timms (April 22, 1894, Oct 9, 1980) of Esom Georgia and had one more daughter Charlotte McCoy ( May 15, 1943) of Mexico City Mexico. Charlotte and her husband Larry are missionaries for the Southern Baptist Mission Board. Seth Rome Fox married Ruey Evelyn Benfield ( Jan 6, 1915- Feb 23, 1964) sister to Lorene Frances Benfield. They had no children.
James Fox was born in 1861 in Alexander County. On Sept. 9 1880, he married Catherine I. Huffman (age 18), Daughter of Miles and Sallie Huffman. They had three children: Susie ( Sept 1883), Preson L. ( June, 1885), and Jason O. ( April, 1889), Catherine died in child birth of their last child in April 1889. On May 20, 1894, James married Elizabeth Wallace. According to records in Catawaba County her age was listed as 37. Little is known about the children or the life of James Fox after 1900. My interest is the Hugh Fox that died in Iredell Co in 1826. This Hugh Fox married Nancy Ann Bridges and had children Moses, Hugh and Mary Ann who married Eli Warren. According to Deed Book R Page 104 dated 24 April 18-- in Iredell Co NC. The abstract states:
"Solomon Loudermilk to Moses Justice for the sum of $120.50, a tract of land
on east side of Little River, joining Fox's old corner, containing 75 acres.
Part of a tract of land granted by the state to James Fox 9 July 1794. The
above tract of land conveyed to James Fox to Hugh Fox, by him to his son
Moses Fox by will, by him to Solomon Loudermilk. It is expressly understood
by the contracting parties that ---- Fox, mother of said Moses Fox, is to
have life estate in the above land and at her death the said Moses Justice
is to have full possession of the land. Signed Solomon Loudermilk. Witness
James King and Isaac King. Proved Aug 1834. Registered 4 Oct 1834.
I have also seen where Moses Fox who
married Susan Bridges is supposedly the son of Hugh Fox and Nancy Bridges.
Nancy Bridges was born abt 1773, the same year as Moses Bridges. Information also given to me from Cathy Egger : Moses Fox (1773-1855) in Alexander Co. Married Susan Bridges.
